This is the tale of young Vasilisa, a Russian Lord's daughter, up in the forbidden north of the country. Vasilisa's mother died giving birth to her, but nevertheless, the girl and her family's life is good. That is, until her father brings home a new wife, Anna, who's very unfitted for life in the barren land. And the stepmother is able to see the house and wood spirits that surround the people, just as Vasilisa is, but other than the young girl, Anna is afraid of the spirits, fears them as demons and that fear incites a dangerous chain of events that culminates in a nightmare.In her “quest†to drive the spirits away, Anna is backed by a young priest, who is haunted by his own urges, wishes and sins. Together they make the people of Vasilisa's home afraid of demons, hell and damnation and they stop their offerings, the spirits starve and go away – leaving the house unguarded. And when some old evil wakes, there is nearly no one there to stop it. “Nearlyâ€, because young Vasilisa does everything she can to keep the spirits alive and thriving and her fey blood makes her able to fight what others can't. Sadly, it also makes her very lonely as well, because it's Russia sometime during the Khan's rule, and people are superstitious, fearing witches and the like. And they fear Vasilisa, because nothing about her is like a “proper woman†should behave. A huge part of this tale is Vasilisa's fight for independence. She sees the two possible ways of life, a woman has at that time, marriage or convent, as the choice between two cages. And she doesn't want any of it. I so felt for her. She is a free and unafraid spirit and I couldn't do anything else, but admire her. She says things that made me want to cheer her own loudly. And her actions are even more awesome.There is another party here, the Winter King, whose whole agenda isn't clear, not even at the end of the book [there are more installments following], although in his way, he is a friend and ally of Vasilisa's. I'm so curious how things will play out between the two!The language this story is told in, is pure poetry, I couldn't believe that this is the author's first book. The language is awesome. And the atmosphere that was created here, dark and so lively, I could nearly see it in front of my inner eye. The sole reason, I gave the book four, instead of five stars, is the pacing at the first half of the book: it's way too slow. But don't let yourself be thwarted! The second half makes more than up for it! When I had passed that point, I was thoroughly hooked, I couldn't lay the book down any longer. I was biting my nails, so immersed in the book I missed appointments. For the second half alone, the book got a place in my top ten this year. And based on the end, I'm very eager to read on, to see what other things Vasilisa is going to experience and what will become of her, when she is fully grown up. If you liked Naomi Novik's “Uprooted†or Julliet Marillier's “Blackthorn and Grimm†novels, this one is for you.
There haven't been many fantasy books lately that truly wowed me. Many new books felt like re-hashes, where authors tried to cash in a certain hype. Characters were one dimensional and very little research and love was involved. This is definitely NOT true when it comes to the "Winternight" trilogy, of which "The Bear and the Nightingale" is the first volume. First of all, this is not some version of the usual British or American fantasy fair but like Cornelia Funke and second "Reckless" volume, this book is set in a mystical version of Russia. The main character Vazya is a bit like a Russian version of Merida. She is feisty, independent but she is also young and some of her actions will have dire consequences. There is also a wonderful and unlikely love story and really great supporting characters. Another reason to love these books is that there is no black and white. There is no good and evil. Things just are and have to be dealt with. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the trilogy and wholeheartedly recommend the trilogy to any reader who love fantasy.

Diese stehen allerdings christlichen Einflüssen gegenüber, die den Glauben an traditionelle Magie und göttliche Wesen ablehnt. Diese Gegenüberstellung und Vasilisas rebellische Jugend sind eingebettet in eine übergreifendere Geschichte von einem geheimnisvollen, eisigem Wesen, das in ihrem Dorf Unheil anrichtet. Doch niemand außer Vasilisa scheint dieses Wesen und seine Absichten wahrzunehmen....Ich habe mir das Buch gekauft, weil ich Naomi Noviks ,Uprooted‘ sehr gern gelesen habe und mir ,The Bear and the Nightingale‘ in diesem Zusammenhang vorgeschlagen wurde. Ich bin nicht enttäuscht! Der Roman verbindet Fantasy mit einer spannenden Familiengeschichte und russischer Folklore, und ist es definitiv wert, gelesen zu werden.
I really enjoyed Novik's Uprooted and felt the Bear and Nightingale delivers a similar experience. It evokes elements of Russian folklore and fairytales which provide a charming background to a well written story. The main character is very relatable and at the same time manages to avoid some of the typical clichés. Written in a touching and humorous way, its a great book for long winter-evenings. While it is part of a trilogy, it also does well as a stand-alone book and has quite an open-ended yet satisfying ending.
The story the writing style keeps one hooked to the story. Really loved it. Though there were some phrase repetitions, nothing that in a second edition will be there.
A very good story, bonechilling at times. Losely based on russian fairytales. I could not stop thinking of it once I finished it!. Very good!
Super! Ich würde es jedem empfehlen, der gerne Magisches Realismus liest. Absolut einzigartig in diesem Genre. Eins von meinen Lieblingsbücher von 2017, vielleicht sogar überhaupt. Erstmal ein bisschen schwierig wegen vielen Russischen Namen, das gewöhnt sich aber schnell und die Handlung ist einfach zu spannend um aufzugeben.
Das Buch hat mich vom ersten Moment an gefesselt. Ich bin froh, dass die beiden Folgeromane bereits veröffentlicht sind.
